TRACKS ON REPEAT: SHAKE THE FROST
If I really had to choose the type of media that never tires me, It’s likely music. Film requires the utmost attention, TV often has seasons to keep up with, books require time & commitment— but not music. For 3-5 minutes, you hear something emotional & raw. If you’re not listening to the music that makes you feel things, then you’re listening to the wrong music.
There’s something about hearing lyrics delivered with such passion— The story of a strangers experience that they share with the world. I find myself often analyzing lyrics, trying to decipher the message or symbolism. In the process, I find myself relating to it in some way— It’s likely what peaked my interest in digging for the message in the first place. My favorite verse off this track is this one:
“well I used to ride a Mustang
and I'd run that thing on high hopes
til' they raised the price of dreams so high I couldn't pay”
There’s something about it that gets me & I can’t quite put my finger on it. I envision the Mustang as symbolism for a false sense of freedom— running a car that would be prone to high speeds with a simple prayer & ‘high hopes’ that nothing would possibly go wrong, until he delivers that last line. a source beyond his control raises the price of his dreams (in this case, fuel) for speed & freedom so high that he couldn’t afford it. It’s a beautiful track & I highly recommend all of Childers discography.
