PAUL JOSEPH REVERE
paul revere’s grandson, paul joseph revere, served with the infantry in the 20th massachusetts, decades after his grandfather made his famous midnight ride. pjr & his brother edward became pow’s at the battle of ball’s bluff in october, 1861. after their release in a prisoner exchange, the brothers re-joined the fight. paul was quickly promoted to lieutenant colonel in 1862. shortly before this promotion, he was wounded in the battle of antietam. sadly, edward was one of 2,000 union soldiers who perished in sharpsburg, maryland. in 1863, paul was promoted to colonel as he lead the 20th massachusetts at chancellorsville— and, in his final days, at gettysburg.
on july 3rd, paul was wounded by a SHELL fragment— piercing his lung, the fragment proved itself fatal as paul died two days later. the union army posthumously promoted him to brigadier general.
