LAST WEEK
well— when you you punch awfish.com into your browser, you’re voluntarily deciding you want to check out whatever i’ve posted to the blog that day— in this case, it’s a journal. proceed if you want.
i took a trip to sanbornton, nh for three days last week. i stayed in a really wonderful airbnb— a four walled, platform tent on a couples large property. my car was parked about a 1/4 mile away from the site, so it wasn’t off-the-grid entirely in terms of location, but the site did lack power and running water (i took an outdoor shower from a pail of water i had to lug down the 1/4 mile)
i took my time heading up and made a few stops at some antique shops on the way— but i arrived to the site around 4 pm on WEDNESDAY. i packed fairly light for this trip— nothing more than my guitar, three changes of clothes, my ricoh film camera, a tripod and a flask of whiskey— a few more odds and ends filled the side pouches of my backpack like various grooming goods & my real nice pelican flashlight. i tossed the bag on my back, grabbed the armful of firewood i picked up at a roadside stop and made my way in.
it began to thunder (i wasn’t complaining) i unpacked my bag and folded my clothes— side note: no matter where you’re traveling, if the stay is more than a day, unpack your damn clothes— living out of a suitcase is a sign you never left boyhood behind.
i sat on that tent platform for a while and poured myself a shot of whiskey, watching the storm move in over the hill in the distance— i took in that view for a while before doing anything else. once i was finished gazing and the rain stopped entirely, i built a fire that would be ready to light as soon as the sun went down. i played my guitar, wrote some lyrics, and began to have some crazy introspective thoughts as to why i decided to take this trip.
11 o clock rolled around and i decided to call it quits— the fire was dying down, and i was getting tired. i lit some incense, read a chapter of the gulag archipelago, and went to sleep— we’ll cover those thoughts & day 2 tomorrow.
