SERIALS: BLACKHAWK (1952) CHAPTER No. 1
I had zero idea that a Blackhawk serial existed until Papasan told me a few nights ago— I always thought it was a title from DC in the silver age. It wasn’t until I found out that Quality Comics published them in the golden age that it totally changed my perspective— it helped even more when I found out it was a collaborative creation amongst Bob Powell, Will Eisner, and Chuck Cudeira. It’s no wonder why the aesthetic of a fictional WWII era pilot squadron made me feel connected with the stories— I’ve always had a fascination with war-era aviation. I think my biggest issue with the silver age books is that it very simply felt like Marvel and DC monopolized the market— you had a choice between two companies that were very similar in terms of uniformity, each creating their respective universe. The silver age Blackhawk almost felt too commercialized— ironic to say for a guy whose favorite medium is commercial art. Anyways, Here’s chapter one of the 1952 serial.
