ON THE ROAD, PART II
we ended up staying at this BEAUTIFUL hotel about an hour past CINCINNATI on wednesday night— the receptionist was incredibly sweet & we had talked for a while about her visit to the bay state as we were checking in. we grabbed some popcorn & headed up to the room (it was incredible, up-to-date, complete with modern art deco furnishings) watching seinfeld until we both killed the lights and got to bed. we made excellent time & were in no rush to get up in the morning— we were well ahead of schedule. the break was NECESSARY as we were totally refreshed for the next 4-5 hour leg of the trip through indiana. 300 miles & witnessing one gnarly tractor trailer accident later, we found ourselves 30 minutes from chicago— unable to check into our hotel in chicago until later due to LOGISTICAL troubles, we decided to stay the night in indiana & then get up early to drive the final stretch.
now take everything i said about the first hotel, and imagine the exact opposite— i swear to god that a hooker would have walked out of there if you had brought her back there. stained carpets, horrendous lighting, a cracked window— it was built in the 80s & it stayed in the 80s. to be fair, they had begun renovating on the other half of the building, so maybe those updates were coming— but in my opinion, they were 20 years too late. nonetheless, we got to sleep without getting killed & headed straight to chicago.
it was smooth sailing all the way in & i was reminded of my strong disdain for chicago winters. It is cold, it is dismal, these folks are not friendly & i am tired. but, joe is a wonderful travel partner & i’m glad to be on this trip together. as for the attendance of this convention, we’ll see what the weekend brings.
