coffee table books: red scared!

RedScared%21.jpg

red scared! is a book i picked up dirt cheap at a used bookstore in northampton (i’m shocked the bookstore didn’t just burn it in protest) this is a wonderful visual trip through the american/soviet propaganda war— it reproduces the posters, films, magazines & other media that could have been perceived as communist threat. it covers the mccarthy years & his crack-down on suspected anti-capitalist rings all the way up to the collapse of the soviet union— and it’s well worth it. it’s opening line stands as one of my favorite john steinbeck quotes—

“a red is any son of a bitch that wants thirty cents when we’re paying twenty-five.”

if you’re looking for a copy, i found it for you here.
