COFFEE TABLE BOOKS: DISCIPLINE EQUALS FREEDOM
If you’re not at familiar with jocko willink, then i suggest you take a seat.
when i was first recommended a jocko podcast, i rolled my eyes. i had heard of jocko willink before, but i had him pinned totally wrong— he wasn’t some grunt who talked up his service, he was a real badass. in his eight years of active duty service (with seal team one & two) willink was a member of the team that seized the russian tanker volgA-NEFT-147, north of the arabian sea. they were carrying iraqi oil in VIOLATION of a u.n. embargo. he served numerous combat tours in the war in iraq, which led him to commanding seal team 3’s task unit bruiser during the battle of ramadi— HE COMMANDED GUYS LIKE LEIF BABIN, SETH STONE, AND CHRIS KYLE, THE DEADLIEST SNIPER IN AMERICAN HISTORY. he’s been awarded the silver & bronze star, and achieved the rank of lieutenant commander. BEFORE RETIREMENT FROM THE NAVY, HE SERVED AS A SEAL INSTRUCTOR.
i picked up his book discipline equals freedom about a month and a half ago— and i highly suggest you do too.
it’s tough to describe as it’s not a TRADITIONAL novel, but it’s not quite a coffee table book either. it’s a manifestation of thoughts on any particular subject, from a guy who’s seen a lot— it ranges from martial arts, to dealing with stress, to overcoming your hesitation on something that terrifies you to your core. it’s written as if willink is projecting himself on you, but as if you asked for it. it feels like he’s 5 inches from your face, screaming these answers so you understand him loud and clear, just like you’d expect an ex-navy seal instructor to do. if you can’t take that sort of pressure, don’t pick up the book— it’ll make you face some cold hard truths.
