ART I DIG: the savage family

I have real fond memories viewing this painting as a kid— always being equally humored and intrigued. i’ve revisited the worcester art museum a handful of times as an adult and found a whole new appreciation for the gems inside of it. when i was last there, i had the same reaction as a kid— i laughed, and then i really examined it. i’ve always been intrigued by what was going through ed savage’s mind as he laid his brush down on this piece— the size of the heads is as stylized as it is realistic. it toes the line between absolute abstraction and genuine family portrait— there are an absurd amount of details that that you find the longer you look at it.

this is one of my serious favorites.
